Dreams are weird. The one Poppa awoke to on March 13, 1969 was no different. He characterizes it as a political dream but only because it involved a senator from Texas that he voted against. In the dream Poppa is apparently living at the Home for Aged Masons where he is visited by “An alcoholic Prof. of UTA” that is in Arlington as the “Campaign Manager for aged Tom Conally.” Supposedly the alcoholic brought Connally to see Poppa because he had voted against Connally causing his defeat. Poppa invites the alcoholic and his wife into his room to chat as the room they are in is apparently too noisy. But his room contains “…old dirty elders” and “…a closet of Rodeo Cowboys – being there under the charge of House girl who cleans my room.” Well, that house girl is doing a terrible job if the room is full of dirty elders and rodeo cowboys! I’m betting it’s not any quieter either. I like that he noted the “…beginning of a new day.” Looks like Poppa and Mimi are visiting us on their way to Austin. Though I’m doing my best to keep in mind time and context while reading these journal entries it is still jarring to read the adjective he chooses to use to describe Hazela our babysitter. Some of my earliest memories are of her.

Curious that Mimi couldn’t find our house as they had just been there the day before, but then I have absolutely no idea where they were coming from. While they seemed to have had a good time with the SAR activities I bet they went to Austin just so Poppa could eat at Picadilly.

This makes sense. Since the previous day was all about the Sons of the American Revolution, the next two are about the Daughters of the American Revolution. (It just dawned on me that my folks were members of several groups as well and were likely just as busy as my grandparents if not busier.) I’m still getting a kick out of Poppa’s ‘midnight’ snacks. Sure crackers and peanut butter make sense, but chased with orange juice? Then the next day coconut pie! And how much is a swallow? Literally one? Out of the carton/jar? I’m guessing yes. Looks like he’s gearing up for a world tour of doctors in the coming days.
