More Seems To Be In Order

Each time I finish one of these entries I want to continue reading the journals and writing more. So today I’ll cover twice as many days and see how that goes.

Poppa seems to be having quite a bit of trouble sleeping, and I wouldn’t say the amount of sleep he got was enough, but I suppose if sleep isn’t working then that amount might seem like enough. Given his previous notes I’m guessing ‘swallows’ means swallows of milk, and while I know he’s puffing on his pipe, his handwriting looks like a few ‘pups’! Two things I wonder about the 13th are 1) why was it significant to note the separate flights home of my uncle and cousin, and 2) Did he get interrupted before finishing the last line, or did he fall asleep?

Feb. 14, I wonder what time they started the ‘thank you’ notes? I always dreaded those, mostly having to write them to relatives and people I did not know for gifts I did not want. As a kid I didn’t understand the importance of the ‘thank you’, nor did I understand or appreciate the forced “come talk to your relative you rarely see on the phone…NOW”. Both of those dreaded childhood events were just a couple of the many ways our family worked at keeping up and my dad, from my perspective, was the King of Staying in Touch. I remember that Elizabethan bed, four poster with a canopy, and believe it is still in use at my uncle’s house.  I can also visualize the room it was in at the home in Arlington. The ‘small bowl of Vit K’ sent me down the internet rabbit hole of vintage cereal boxes in search of the one he might have had; found some good/funny stuff.

I want a space badge!

Animal cracker cereal? Yes please!

rice.krinkles

Um, that’s all kinds of wrong and hilarious!

Feb. 14, Glad to see he experienced a fine ‘delight of old man’, BM’s were, from my perspective, a not necessary regular (no pun intended) topic of conversation in our household.

Wonder if I’m getting enough albuen? Man, these class notes are far from interesting but this journal is building my vocabulary.

Chlorosis: chlo·ro·sis /klôˈrōsəs/ noun

anemia caused by iron deficiency, especially in adolescent girls, causing a pale, faintly greenish complexion. It was a common diagnosis in the 19th century.

Also, is that quote from the Royal University Nerve Clinic in Germany legit?

I want to eat at the Café (Circle C?) Ranch House. Sad to read of the loss of a child, seems like Leukemia may have been a relatively new “discovery” based on how he wrote about it. Wow, Poppa was a member of a LOT of organizations, his church, the Masons, Sons of the Republic of Texas, KSJ (not sure what that is) and SAR (again unsure of what that is), oh yeah and some medical association which put on that steak dinner thing. Similar to my folks, involved to the point of being too involved. Meh, if it made them happy, more power to ‘em!

More insomnia. Reading about his convictions I think I’m getting a better understanding of faith and how turning over troubling issues to faith can be liberating. Is that ‘union’ or ‘onion’ crackers? Ohhh, punctuation would’ve helped: “onion, 4 crackers”. What an odd snack, cheese, onion, crackers and milk (insert involuntary ‘ick’ shudder here). Awww, “…my sweetheart..”

Glad he was not hurt on his stumble. I never understood apple pie and cheese, then again I’ve never tried it. I had no idea TX got that cold, though I would think 72 degrees inside the house would be comfortable; I haven’t been 79 years old yet though.

Practicing his signature I see, just as I did and my students do today.

Chalybeate cha·lyb·e·ate /kəˈlibēət/ adjective

of or denoting natural mineral springs containing iron salts

Don’t know if or when I’d ever use that in a sentence, or conversation for that matter. Seems that Dr. Sherrer couldn’t be bothered for a good product endorsement.
